Trip Advisor, The Empty Promise

Trip Advisor, The Empty Promise

Whether you are traveling to a new city, or just looking for something “different” in your hometown, we’ve all been there.  You go to a restaurant which is highly rated on Trip Advisor or Yelp, order with great anticipation and then feel a grave sense of disappointment when the food arrives.  You think to yourself, “why on Earth did this mediocre place win such high praises?”.  Not to sound snobby, but the reason is simple.  Sites like Trip Advisor and Yelp amass the opinions of the general public, so that sites win praise for all sorts of reasons, that often have nothing to do with food.  Think about it.  Would you ever take restaurant advice from a teenager who’s still afraid to try sushi?  How about from your Aunt Gladys, who only goes to buffets, because she’s out to get as much food for the lowest price possible?   Of course not.  But with Trip Advisor and Yelp, that’s exactly what you’re doing.

We’ve all been there.  You go to a restaurant which is highly rated on Trip Advisor or Yelp, order with great anticipation, and then feel a grave sense of disappointment when the food arrives.  You think to yourself, “why on Earth did this mediocre place win such high praises?”

Our point here is to not bash these sites, which still provide great value.  The point is that with Lens Gourmand, you have an alternative, at least when it comes to dining out in Valencia.  The restaurants, chefs and winemakers that we feature on our website are carefully selected based on the sole fact that we live here, and we like them.  In other words, one must be chosen to be on our website, period.

The Lens Gourmand team is comprised of English and Spanish speaking expats living in Valencia.  Each of us has our own specific skills and interests, and all of us share a passion for food, wine and all things gastronomy.   We have collectively lived in the United States, Japan, The Netherlands, and Spain, and tasted are way through countless other travel destinations.  We don’t claim to be food critics, but we have done our share of dining, and think we know a little something about good eating.  But don’t take our word for it…try one of the restaurants or wines that we recommend, and let us know how you feel.

Buen Appetito!
